This gift is the result of a joint project between The Supreme Court of The Netherlands and the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague. With this design, we presented our contemporary, artistic interpretation of an old institution and its continuing importance and presence in modern society. Abstract concepts such as independence, stability, neutrality, impartiality and justice are essential parts of the judicial system. Our aim, as graphic designers, has been to create a visual artwork that conveys these qualities. Justice is as old as civilization and throughout history numerous symbols have been created to represent and give meaning to these words. We have taken some of the symbols and used them as the starting point for our design.
When arranged in the right composition and illuminated from the right angle, these 3D- printed objects associated with the judicial system together form the iconic face of one of the most influential personalities in the history of Dutch legislation: Hugo Grotius.
